Tech found system thawed out upon arrival. Customer showed tech a picture of the coils partially frozen but nothing more than normal frost buildup on a heat pump at the coils will be frosted over for 30 minutes before the board initiates a defrost cycle. Customer stated that the fan will shut off and system will start blowing cool air but won’t stop until the thermostat is shut off. This is describing a normal defrost cycle, except it should switch back over to heat once coil is thawed out. The only scenarios that could cause it to get stuck is a defrost sensor getting stuck or a reversing valve getting stuck. Tech put power on and off the reversing valve and found it operating properly and showed no signs of getting stuck. Tech also verified sensor is opening and closing and never got stuck with tech present. Tech informed customer that the sensor is the only thing left in the defrost operation, but tested good at this time. Tech sent an estimate to replace the sensor. Tech s

Customer showed pictures of a frozen condenser. Tech found defrost board is not receiving power, but y has been bypassed and ran straight to the contactor. Tech ohmed out coil and ambient sensors and found the ambient sensor was at 1k ohms which is well over 100 degrees, outdoor temp is 48. Tech jumped r to y to put power on the condenser and found it was locked out on ambient sensor error. Tech tested a truck stock sensor and found system runs with y running through the board and not bypassed and system runs a proper defrost cycle. Tech the. Had to diagnose why the system is not getting power on red. Tech found 24v at the AHU on r going to the condenser indicating thermostat wire needs to be replaced. Tech left red and y connected and disconnected thermostat r to allow board to be powered up with y call temporarily. Tech quoted replacing sensor and thermostat wire. If thermostat wire replacement is approved, 2 techs will be needed. Customer chose to replace sensor today and

Technician found that 30 amp fuse was tripped. Once reset technician did not find any components shorted to ground. Upon further inspection technician found 30 amp breaker with #8 copper wire was spliced to #6 aluminum wire coming from main panel 50 amp disconnect. Wire and breaker are to small to Handel to 10k and compressor. Technician spoke with install supervisor and informed them of findings. Technician removed 5k heat for the moment so heat strips won’t pull 38amps with 1 set heat strips pull 20 amps. Install supervisor is informed and will come with solutions.

- Tech found system operating normally upon arrival with thermostat satisfied at 74 degrees. Tested auxiliary heat and defrost control. Tech recommended keeping an eye on the system and take photos of the thermostats if they display any fault codes. Also recommended confirming the outdoor unit is running and explained the defrost cycle. - Panel insulation was loose in the air handler which may cause an air flow issue. Re-secured insulation to panel and confirmed thermostat programming. System is operating normally at this time. No charge under contractor warranty.
