Performed ESA on one system, customer not home at this time. Located leak at evaporator coil, ran system in cool mode with low ambient temp. Unable to accurately measure charge in cool mode with low temp. Informed customer of findings and gave option of adding leak freeze or replacing coil. Customer opted to wait at this time and see how system performs this summer. Found no further challenges.

Customer stated the thermostat stays satisfied but does not think the blower is running when heat is turned on in the afternoon. Customer stated when they bump the heat up first thing, they can hear the blower run very loud and heats quickly, but in the afternoon, when it runs they don’t hear the blower run. Tech found system is operating properly and is a 3 stage system. Tech verified low stage runs when heat is bumped up one degree and high stage runs when heat is bumped up several degrees. Tech found a normal flame as well. Tech explained that when they bump the heat up from 68 to 73 first thing in the morning, they are hearing the system run in high stage. In the afternoon it is running low stage. Tech also explained it is using less gas and electricity when running low stage. Tech also verified temp split and verified thermostat satisfied from 73 to 75 while tech was there.

Tech replaced 90 percent furnace heat exchanger. Tech tested system and checked gas pressure. System has a high medium and low gas pressure setting. Tech found pressure at 2.3 for low, 5.5 for medium and high stage at 9.4. Tech increased regulator and found high side at 10.4. System is operating properly at this time.

Tech found flames spitting back occasionally and could smell soot. Tech found heat exchangers are sooted out causing the intake to melt. Heat exchanger are under parts warranty and cost the same price as washing them out. Customer chose to replace heat exchangers. Part needs to be ordered. 2 inch pvc 1 needed one 1/2 inch elbow needed for drain.

Customer was informed by a separate contractor that the second stage heat exchanger was cracked and needs to be replaced. - Tech found no cracks or lacerations in either heat exchanger. Found pressure switch hoses backed up with water and drain box was clogged. Found plastic fresh air intake melted to the burner cage. Intake is almost completely obstructed and preventing burners from receiving oxygen. System runs temporarily but overheats in the burner compartment. Checked gas pressures and confirmed proper startup. Need to order replacement intake vent and reconfirm operation. - Tech flushed all pressure switch lines, cleaned flame sensor and igniter, and removed water from draft compartment. - Customer invested in a one system premium service agreement, paid monthly. Left power off to system.
