HVAC systems are a combination of interlinking units and parts that work as a close-knit team to heat, ventilate, and cool your home. If you don’t have much experience or knowledge of these complex machines, it’s understandable that you may have questions about the HVAC maintenance timeline and system replacement outlook. Keep reading to learn what you need to know about taking care of your HVAC system.
Maintenance Timeline
Cooling and heating system maintenance is best scheduled every six months from the moment your systems are installed. If you happen to install a new A/C or heat pump in the middle of summer or winter, make sure you call your HVAC contractor to schedule your HVAC maintenance well ahead of time. The height of these seasons are quite busy for good contractors!
Even though your cooling and heating systems get all the credit for keeping you comfortable, your air ducts play a vital role. An efficient duct system (i.e. no leaks and well insulated) is imperative to maximize energy efficiency. Include a comprehensive duct inspection during one of your semi-annual HVAC maintenance visits.
Replacement Timeline
Strange noises from your HVAC system can sometimes make life uneasy. For starters, you may worry that you are facing an expensive HVAC repair. Or, perhaps, your instincts and past repair problems may tell you it’s time for a new A/C or heat pump replacement.
Generally speaking, your split-system A/C unit should give you a service life of 10–15 years. The more TLC you give it, the longer it lasts with better efficiency. Heat pumps endure more wear than your A/C because they work all year long. The average life service for air-source heat pumps is 8–12 years.
The average life service for air ducts depends on quality and frequency of maintenance. Tried-and-true round or square metal ducts can last a lifetime if they’re well cared for.
