These problems may also show up in the form of higher monthly heating bills.

- System blowing cold air. First, for a gas system make sure your thermostat is in the “On” position and set to “Heat”. Also, make sure that other gas appliances such as a gas stove, starts normally to confirm that gas is flowing to the house. If the furnace has a traditional pilot light, check to see if the flame is lit. If you have a heat pump, check your thermostat settings to ensure it is set to “Auto”. Beyond these checks, a heating professional is required for further diagnosis and repair.
- Warm airflow through vents is weak. The HVAC system’s air filter may be clogged. Many do-it-yourselfers can visibly check the condition of the air filter and replace it with a clean filter if necessary. Other potential problems, however, range from a defective furnace fan to ductwork issues, and these malfunctions must be handled by an experienced HVAC technician.
- The pilot flame appears yellow. A healthy pilot light should be a bright, steady blue. If it appears yellow and/or wavering, it could be lacking adequate oxygen for complete combustion. A faulty pilot flame can be a safety issue, and it may also prevent the gas furnace burner from igniting.
- Rapid cycling. If the furnace cycles on and off rapidly and repeatedly, this is not normal. Short heating cycles can be the result of an overheating furnace, a system that is too large for the house, or thermostat issues. Rapid cycling in a heat pump can also be caused by a refrigerant leak, contact your HVAC professional for a proper diagnosis and solution.
