When your AC isn’t cooling your home at all or is blowing warm air during the hot summer months, you certainly have a problem that you’ll want to resolve quickly. While there are several reasons for an AC not blowing cool air, some reasons are more common than others. What follows are some of the most common issues that could result in your cooling system not blowing air as it should.
Tripped Circuit Breaker
One of the most common reasons for an AC unit not blowing air is due to no power. It can also be an easy fix. Check the circuit box to make sure the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped. If it has tripped and continues to trip repeatedly, you should call your HVAC professional to diagnose the underlying problem.
Wrong Thermostat Setting
Your AC will only cool your home if the thermostat is actually set to the “Cool” setting. If your thermostat is set to “Heat,” don’t worry, as this is a common cause of an AC not blowing air. Set the thermostat setting to “Cool” at your preferred temperature and make sure the fan setting is on “Auto.”
Issues With the Evaporator Coil
Your cooling system uses an indoor and outdoor heat-exchanger coil to cool your home. If your AC is blowing air but it’s not cool air, it could be due to the indoor evaporator coil which could be causing ice accumulation. This happens to the evaporator when the refrigerant level is low or heat exchange is restricted across the coil because it’s dirty or the filter is clogged. Your HVAC professional can correctly diagnose the problem and get your AC cooling your home again.
Dirty Condenser Coil
The outdoor heat exchanger is called the condenser coil. The condenser coil is exposed to the elements all year. Dirt and debris can build up on the coil and the thin fins, which can cause warm air to blow from your vents. The coil and fins are cleaned along with the entire system during your AC professional maintenance tune up. Your system should receive a precision tune up twice a year.
