Purchasing HVAC equipment and service is an important decision that homeowners must make. Much of the comfort and monthly expenses in your home are related to your heating and cooling system and the quality of service the equipment receives. Some HVAC companies use pressuring sales tactics to persuade you to purchase certain products or services. Here are a few tips to help you find one that cares about your needs and what will work best for you and your family.
Ask for Needed Information
Choosing the right HVAC system or maintenance contract is so important, be sure that your HVAC company provides the information you need to make the best decision for your home. The HVAC company should be able to provide different options to meet the needs of your home as well as your budget. You want them to make suggestions, but the decision to purchase or not should always fall completely on the owner.
Don’t Give in to Pressure
Sometimes a sales pitch can feel so intense, you might find yourself wanting to sign a contract just so you can make it stop and get things over with. Watch out for sales people who:
- Talk too fast and won’t slow down.
- Don’t listen without interrupting you.
- Don’t offer alternatives.
- Want you to sign anything without giving you time to read the fine print.
- Behave as if they are doing you a favor. If you entrust a company with your business, you are doing them a favor and not the other way around.
- Imply in one way or another that you are unwise or that you will be taking an irresponsible risk by not buying their product.
A Company with Integrity
While it is true, for example, that malfunctioning furnaces can lead to carbon monoxide buildup, beware of contractors who try to scare you or shame you into buying a specific brand. It is one thing to tell you that your furnace should be replaced and then offer brand and model suggestions. It is another thing to pressure the homeowner into purchasing a specific brand. A good contractor will listen and work with you to match your needs which may include suggesting a second brand to meet the needs of your home and or your financial needs.
